4 July 1950 - 28 March 1951. Aboard USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CV-47) for first Korean combat tour. Departed San Diego 5 July, operations in Hawaiian area 10-24 July and on 24th enroute to forward area and combat operations. Arrived Buckner Bay, Okinawa on 1 August. Combat action began 5 August with a fighter sweep over airfields at Mokpo, Kwangju and Junsan. In this and ensuing month , the squadron supported the group action with airfield sweeps, armed reconnaissance flights over enemy lines of communication, combat air patrols, and close support missions. In September, launched preliminary strikes on Yalu River bridges. In the first of the bridge strikes on 9 November 1950, the Squadron Skipper LCDR W.T. Amen, engages and shot down a MIG-15 in the Sinuiju area, scoring the first Navy kill in jet aerial combat. Also of note during that first Korean tour is the fact that Lt. Carl E. Dace had the dubious distinction of being the first navy jet pilot to use the ejection seat in combat. Their efforts won the SUN DOWNERS a second Presidential Unit Citation.
29 March-7April 1951. Transferred to VALLEY FORGE at sea and in Yokosuka, 30 March underway for United States. Arrived San Diego 7 April 1951.
8 April - 10 October 1951. At NAS Miramar; majority of personnel on leave for the first month. Participated in coast defense exercises in June. Bombing with jet aircraft emphasized in training at El Centro during July. In September, transferred to Air Task Group ONE.
11 October 1951- 3 July 1952. On board VALLEY FORGE. Underway for Pearl Harbor 15 October, air operations from Barbers Point and aboard ship in Hawaiian area from 20 October to 26 November, and on 4 December arrived Yokosuka, Japan for second tour in the Korean theater. LCDR John W. Ramsey was the Commanding Officer. (John W. Ramsey also was member of the first VF-11 Sun Downers and flew in combat at Guadalcanal in 1943 scoring one dive bomber and one Zero). Familiarization flight in the combat area began 9 December and first combat mission on the 11th. For six months, the squadron flew interdiction missions, armed reconnaissance, CAP, photo escort. Last combat mission was flown on 10 June 1952. On 20 June departed the WestPac area, arrived Pearl Harbor the 26th and at San Diego on 3 July. On same date detached from Air Task Group ONE and rejoined Air Group Eleven.
3 July 1952-29 March 1953. At NAS Miramar. Leave, reforming and training. On 30 October 1952 reported to Air Task Group ONE for operational control. Gunnery, bombing practice with F9F-5 at El Centro. On 29 March began third tour of Korean War and fifth combat tour in Squadron history.
29 March-25 November 1953. In to finish of the Korean War. Deployed on USS BOXER, transferred to USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN for duty that saw end of the war. As a component of Air Task Group ONE, the squadron arrived on line on 12 May 1953. Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN under command of CDR A. E. Vickery transferred to the USS LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CV-39) after the initial forty day tour aboard the USS BOXER, and was "in to the finish" on the "CHAMP" when the truce agreement was signed on 27 July 1953. A "Sun Downer" flight composed of LT. J.M. RIGGAN, LTJG W. A. FINLAY, jr, LTJR A. R. LOOMER, and ENS J. J. MCGINNIS, made the last Navy strike of the Korean War at 1730 that afternoon. When the LAKE CHAMPLAIN (CV-39) left the line for the United States, Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ELEVEN returned to its parent ship. The USS BOXER (CV-21) and remained in the combat area until the scheduled tour was completed in November 1953. Returned to San Diego on the Boxer arriving there 25 November 1953.
The SUN DOWNERS had completed three combat tours in the Korean War in three years.
